Most people assume that cabbage and lettuce are nutritionally the same although they are both leafy and greenish vegetables and contain small amounts of calories to aid weight loss, they both offer nutritional value but differ in their respective contents. These are the main differences between cabbage and lettuce. As per calorie content cabbage has nearly twice the calories of lettuce. On a 100-gram mass, cabbage has 25 calories while lettuce has just about 14 calories. These calories are mainly carbohydrates with little protein and fat. If we talk about dietary fiber cabbage has as twice dietary fiber as lettuce dietary fiber. Fiber helps to maintain bowel health and lowers cholesterol levels. Another difference is the level of vitamin C they both contain. Cabbage is a good source of vitamin C whereas lettuce has not, cabbage contains approximately 60 vitamin C intake needed while lettuce contains just around 4 percent of the average needed vitamin C. Vitamin C intake helps to prevent iron deficiencies by improving iron absorption. Cabbage is in fact tougher than lettuce meaning it’s harder to bite into it also has more smell what everyone would say odor, oh!! so lettuce is crunchy and sadly cabbage isn’t. Vitamin B6 which helps brain function is present in cabbage and absent in lettuce, vitamin b6 also known as pyridoxine is a water-soluble vitamin that your body needs for several functions. Your body cannot produce vitamin b6 so you must obtain it from foods like cabbage. Here I’m just going to say that cabbage has more nutrients than lettuce but lacks vitamin. Vitamin K; both cabbage and lettuce contain a good amount of vitamin K as it is also beneficial for us. Vitamin K8 helps in blood coagulation and bone development, it is also the only fat-soluble vitamin with a specific coenzyme function. Lettuce is an excellent source of vitamin A which is lacking in cabbage. Vitamin A is important for growth, vision, and development. It is also important for the maintenance of bones, immune function, and reproduction (the most common concern). One can use lettuce to fulfill one’s daily requirements.
There are three general lettuce classes.
- Butterhead – called Boston or Bibb. It comes in looser heads and has a buttery texture. Best lettuce to use as your Chop Salad.
- Crisphead – called Iceberg, is the most common type, known for its crispiness and less for its flavor. Because of its “crunch”, it’s best to use shredded.
- Romaine – forms in longer heads. Most commonly used in Caesar salads, it has a more bitter/herb taste.
If we talk about the types of cabbage its can be divided into two classes one is red cabbage and the other is called green cabbage, they’re both from the same family. They just happen to be different varieties within the same family. One main difference is their flavor. It’s pretty nuanced as far as the flavor goes. It’s not as big of a difference as you might imagine. So, green cabbage is going to be a little bit mellower and kind of have a vegetal taste. Now, if you have a smaller head of cabbage, it’s going to be much more intense than the larger head of cabbage. In comparison, red cabbage is actually going to be sweeter and slightly floral.
